Free and Reduced Lunch Program

Children participating in free/reduced price meals are much more likely to be uninsured than those who are not. It can be a good idea to target outreach specifically to these children.

The USDA authorizes sharing school meals participant information with certain community organizations who provide Hoosier Healthwise outreach and enrollment assistance. School districts must enter into a data sharing agreement and provide parents the opportunity to opt-out of sharing their information.

Athletics Program

Children participating in athletics are a good target for outreach since most are required to have a physical to play a sport.
Schools can add a question about insurance coverage to emergency contact cards with an Opt-out clause for those not interested in further information.  School districts can gather data for partnering agency or appropriate staff person to help with enrollment assistance.
Flyers and information about Hoosier Healthwise and the importance of having insurance coverage can be distributed at athletic department and coaches meetings and at all parent information meetings for each sport.
